A new donut shop, Handcraft Doughnuts, has opened inside Union Market in Washington D.C. The shop is the dream of husband and wife team Kara Terrell and Ike Emejuru who aspired to create a community centered around small batch, handmade, fresh artisanal doughnuts. The couple began their journey in the pastry world after their love of travel and adventure led them to unique pastry experiences. Their most memorable experience was in Kenya, where they shared pastries with a giraffe named Daisy.
They enrolled in a local doughnut-making class, spent time working on recipes, bootstrapped in a commercial kitchen, and two years later, the rest was history
