U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is scheduled to testify to Congress on Tuesday about the Trump administration's trade policy and the United States-Mexico-Canada agreement. Lighthizer's appearance before the Senate Finance Committee comes just minutes after President Donald Trump confirmed that he will be meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week in Japan,The U.S. and China have implemented punishing tariffs in recent months and the two countries appear far apart from clinching a deal to end the trade war. Trump has said he is willing to put new tariffs on $300 billion more of Chinese goods.

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, Trump's update to NAFTA, is awaiting congressional approval before it can go into effect.earlier this month that involves Mexico deploying thousands of its national guard troops to its southern border. Trump had pledged to put tariffs on Mexican imports unless the country took new action to stem immigration into the U.S.
