Google pledged $750 million worth of its own land for residential use, part of $1 billion promised to address the housing crisis in the Bay Area announced Tuesday.

Google pledged $1 billion over the next 10 years to try to address an affordable housing crisis in the San Francisco Bay Area.

“Our goal is to help communities succeed over the long term, and make sure that everyone has access to opportunity, whether or not they work in tech,” Pichai said, adding that just 3,000 homes were built in the southern Bay Area. In Santa Clara County, which encompasses San Jose, Mountain View and Palo Alto, there is a shortage of more than 35,000 affordable housing units, Bramson said. There will also need to be infrastructure improvements to handle population growth, he added.

joesteel Or they could spend a tiny fraction of that lobbying for systemic change that would make a bigger difference

So a leading Internet company can't figure out how to do some work outside Mountain View, then?

Lmao let me see that’s about 3 duplexes and 4 houses in Fremont lmao good job 👍🏽

So people are going to have google as landlords? I’m assuming google will also be their service providers for phone and internet? So poor people will be dependent on google and then google will make them use their products? Seems a little dystopian to me

it will be addressed later on CNN.
