Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance has resigned from his 30-year association with UK’s Royal Shakespeare Company in protest over the theater’s sponsorship deal with oil company BP. Though…

actor last appeared on stage in an RSC production in 1989, his very public resignation as a longstanding “associate artist” is, at the least, a public relations blow to the prestigious company. In a long, Rylance writes, “I feel I must resign as I do not wish to be associated with BP any more than I would with an arms dealer, a tobacco salesmen or any company or individual who willfully destroys the lives of others alive and unborn. Nor do I believe would William Shakespeare.

a series of high-profile protests by artists and campaigners against BP and other global oil corporations at UK cultural institutions ranging from the National Portrait Gallery to the Royal Opera House and the British Museum.” Writes Rylance, “The RSC could turn this situation on its head and give young people much more value than a cheap £5 ticket. They could give them the support of Shakespeare in their stand against our addiction to energy dealers who would willingly destroy us for a quick quid.”, RSC artistic director Gregory Doran and executive director Catherine Mallyon said they were “saddened” by Rylance’s decision but that corporate sponsorship is “an important part” of the RSC’s funding.

Rylance played Hamlet and Romeo in RSC productions in 1989. He won the 2016 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Steven Spielberg’sand he’s won three Tony Awards (

Good for you Bing Bunny

I stopped my car when I heard this on the radio as I was crying with admiration

Thank you!

Where to next, Mark? If you start your own company, count me in!

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Bravo!

TeamINEOS should take note. Well done sir.

I'm with Mark.

Ledgehammer

Good for him!

It’s the only way now

How much would I pay for a photo of him filling up at a BP station...

👍❤️

What a legend!!

Is he going to employ all these people ? Hmmmm?

He's doesnt have integrity. He's an ego maniac. Fact

Encore

Good for him. MaureenLipmanUK he will not regret his stance in BP! You should have a good think about it yourself.

Good for him. Lot of respect for that.

Jc4pmTomski 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌹✊🏻👍🏻

Looking into the company's history and what the bigger association behind does and in which sectors they are involved often makes me shiver.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It was Intimacy with commerce that he coldly rejected.

bravo

Important👌

Mark Rylance, you're a hero. Thank you for your action.

What a wonderful humanitarian Mark Rylance is and TheRSC this is Shameful.

BRAVO.....and he is a fine actor as well....

SueBarnish People with integrity are few & far between, so good to find one with bucketloads of it. I’d boycott BP too, but we’re in a remote area garage-wise & BP it is round here if we want decent fuel.

He only buys oil from small, artisanal boutique refineries.

The real Easter Egg is that he’s even better than we thought.

King

Now, that's how it's done in 2019!!!

Wow wonderful sir....respect. .

If I could love him any more...

Yes he still flies and drives a car, hypocrite much? 🤣 Just a shyster con artist virtue signalling idiot. Who is he anyway? I don't watch films

Oh give him a virtue signalling award!! 🤣 Acting is a waste of CO2

Sucks to be him

By all means, refuse to participate. Reject their sponsorships. Divest them from endowments. Return their art collections. Remove them from your boards. Oil money is blood money, and those who turn a blind eye to the harm they create have no place in civil society.

Bravo!!!!

Bravo!

64alexm what a legend

Class act. 👏👏👏👏👏

Standing ovation !!

Wonderful! I appreciate this so much.

🙏🙏🙏🙏👋👋👋👋💐💐💐💐💐💐

Kudos and karma to Mark, a true hero.

👏🏽👏🏽

SICKB0Y_ what scumbags FT RSC NFSE

Well done Mark. Great to see someone standing up for their beliefs.

Love refusing to be supported by big oil! Hope that unborn comment wasn't indicating you are anti-abortion

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

👏💞

Good on him👏🏻

Nice! I just saw him last summer as Iago (not RSC), he was just brilliant.

Does he suggest any other sponsors? That would be the icing on the cake.

Bravo Mr. Rylance. A great actor reminds us that our common humanity is a greater cause than our neo-feudal baronages killing the world for their profits.

Now that’s what I call a Big Friendly Giant

Top bloke!

my hat off to you, Mark.

Shakespeare noted 'we all actors' but some get paid for hypocrisy. Using hypocrites to promote a cause, compromises it. Staying clear of actors differentiates thinking &creating individuals from the dumb consuming mob.

We all need to do this. We have started monitoring what has Palm Oil in to avoid it. Decreased sales of single use plastic items can impact change. We can all do a little bit but that can snowball into effective change.

Well done Mark! 💚
