The Morrison government warned Nine Entertainment Co an explosive segment it aired about One Nation might need to be registered under the recently introduced foreign influence transparency scheme.
The footage aired by Nine in March showed former One Nation Queensland leader Steve Dickson visiting a strip club in the United States, groping a woman and making derogatory comments. He resigned shortly after the footage went to air.
After Nine's segment went to air, Al Jazeera said the footage had been obtained as part of an investigation into One Nation links to the National Rifle Association in the US but had appeared on Nine "without the consent" of the Qatari broadcaster. He said correspondence like that from the government has a "chilling effect" because of the possible penalties associated with the laws, from which media outlets are not exempt.
