JUST IN: Juul CEO steps down as the company announces it will pull all advertising in the U.S.

Kevin Burns has stepped down as chief executive of embattled e-cigarette maker Juul, amid intensifying scrutiny of the brand's marketing practices and a public health crisis that has seenBurns will be replaced by K.C. Crosthwaite, a former executive at tobacco-maker Altria, which took a 35 percent stake in Juul last year.

Crosthwaite will continue “a broad review of the company’s practices and policies to ensure alignment with its aim of responsible leadership within the industry,” Juul said in a statement released on Wednesday.Juul also announced it will withdraw all advertising in the U.S. The company had already axed its youth-focused social media marketing after the Food and Drug Administration demanded action from e-cigarette makers due to the huge spike in teen vaping use.

Health officials are seeing “more and more cases” every day, the Centers for Disease Control told a congressional panel at an emergency hearing on Tuesday. Patients experience coughing, fever, trouble breathing, chest pain, vomiting, diarrhea and general fatigue. The majority of patients are between the ages of 18 and 34, and nearly three-quarters are men, according to the CDC.

Federal prosecutors in California are reportedly conducting a criminal probe into Juul for deceptive marketing practices that targeted minors, according to

Just the U.S?

We need more than this to fix this problem.

Do the right thing vaping

I worked at a vape shop and out of all the products I feel that Juul is the most legit when it comes to trying to quit smoking. The products taste crappy so I don’t think it attracts as many kids as people might think.

ok so pull the ads in the US and ramp up ads around the world! Good job!

That's like when all smoking ads were banned, and that just makes teens, and young people want to do it more. Sadly young people do things like vaping as a way of defiance to parents, and others of authority. Also not wanting to miss out on doing it because they think it's cool.

Smart

Rediculous. 6 people die from tainted THC but smoking cigs is still ok.

Since this was posted, about 20 people died from smoking related illnesses. priorities

People! Please understand that the people sick & dying were putting illegal drugs and/or harmful substances NOT intended for use in a vaping device. Vaping is a safe & and effective alternative to smoking tobacco, if used as directed by the manufacturers.

good, we need to get people and kids back too the basics and smoke reel cigaretes

Marlboro exec stepped in to fill the spot.. weird

From blaming it on the weed to resigning. Nice.

IT'S WHAT THEY USE TO EXTRACT THC AND CBD.

Hmmm just saw a GIANT billboard ad announcing a new Juul product yesterday in downtown Dallas.

...and not Canada? other countries? If it's wrong in the USA, why not everywhere else? JUUL needs to be shut down.

The chemical needs to be respectfully scientifically tested on a daily bases to make sure it is respectfully clean from any pathogens:) also from any harm for the users that use the chemical:)

Progress. Progress.

It appears Juul’s business plan is to addict as many people as possible. Marketing that appealed to children is disgusting. Atria has, and continues to, push deadly tobacco products on the public. No one ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Personally I don't smoke anything or take alcohol but am a foodie which is just as bad or even worse.

This will do substantially more bad than good. Many thousands of Americans have either used Juul's to quit smoking actual cigarettes (myself included) or are actively in the process of doing so.

The whole controversy is stupid, contrived, dramatic played up shrilly by the totally corrupt media persons. Hundred of thousands have died due to alcohol poisoning within 10 days. Have they banned alcohol? This is another facet of neoliberalism. vaping Juul

look I don't vape myself but the problem isn't really kids vaping if it as dangerous as people think WHERE ARE THE PERENTS MAKING DANGEROUS THINGS ILLEGAL WHOULD MAKE THE WORLD BORING

Will I still be able to bring my juul to parties?

So can I find the blueberry flavour in the e/store or not?

That's your headline? Really?

Might be worth mentioning he's being replaced by a big tobacco guy. You had room in the tweet.

Did people forget cigarettes are way worse and kill more people?

KatTimpf I hope you will rethink your position on this. I'd hate to see you get sick or die and I think you can spread the word about the dangers.

Pushing Poison.

You might say he vanished in a cherry steam cloud...

yes but JUULvapor will continue to kill other people so that's ok right?

Vaping is dead. Ya see 'Merica, things are gonna be alright.

And.....he´s replaced with a tobacco indusry executive. Never saw that coming.

all the *disrupt* technologies are mostly about finding ways to skirt current laws until the law catches up. Short term profits(if any), long term catastrophic losses. Lets sell nicotine that isn't tobacco and then cut and run when the heat turns up on our grey market nonsense!

He'll ne ok, already made all his millions off of people who believed this was better than smoking

Morning_Joe What the Fuck is wrong with this country? Attacking a cigarette alternative but not big tobacco..... I have a strong feeling big tobacco is behind every bit of this. Juul would not sell out to them like many others have. Cigs kill hundreds of thousands every year........

Huffers holding their breath

Morning_Joe Joe, I don't believe for 1 second, that the transcript won't be heavily edited by the White House.

The tobacco industry has existed in the US for hundreds of years. Vaping? Like, 24 months. Why?

Sell addictive poison and makes lots of money? An all too common biz plan for some companies in this country. They are as bad as the tobacco industry. $$ first.

Now do cigarettes.

Lols

Who cares...

This is truly all an assault on miss_subways existence.

And cigarettes are still legal why?

Peace out sour kraut!

I saw an ad just last night.
