Madewell will finally break free of struggling parent company J.Crew, after the denim brand filed to go public this month.

American Eagle and Abercrombie & Fitch have also seen strong response after launching jeans with more inclusive fits.Madewell's planned IPO may finally break it free of struggling parent J.Crew, but the denim maker will then be alone to fight big-name denim competitors like Levi Strauss, Wrangler, and American Eagle.

Madewell, however, faces stiff competition from the abundance of similar retailers with overlapping offerings, more innovative denim competitors, and a growing secondhand market.
