Trump apparently thought he could succeed where Giuliani had failed by forcing clarity onto the Ukrainian tangle—but now he’s mired in it, deeper than ever

Giuliani had grown wide-eyed over reports of Biden dirt in Ukraine. Trump’s personal attorney, often representing himself in a quasi-official role, as the whistle-blower complaint makes clear, had been mining contacts with connections both governmental and in the private sector, flying to assignations in foreign capitals, and trying to set up deals. But the oppo gold he was searching for—if it ever existed, which is doubtful—didn’t materialize.

Finally, say two sources, Trump grew frustrated with his personal attorney and took a more direct approach—one that now may earn him a place in history asIt’s not surprising that Giuliani believed there was gold in those hills. Ukraine’s reputation for corruption, for rumor and wild exaggeration and big, shady payoffs, is well earned, and once a certain sort of Ukrainian player saw his intense hunger, a panoply of sources seemed to arise to satisfy it.
