The blackouts in California highlight a divide in a region with growing income disparity. Losing power was less painful for those who could afford solar panels or portable generators.

This Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, photo provided by Kyla Awalt shows Chole Awalt, front, and her brother Colton Awalt sitting on the couch while electrical cords are seen running through the house from a generator outside during Pacific Gas and Electric's shutoff in Paradise, Calif.

The blackouts are highlighting a divide in a region with growing income disparity where access to electricity is increasingly available to those who can afford to pay. “They’re facing, what am I going to feed my kids if I can’t cook and this food is spoiled? And how will I feed my kids next week?” Kuhn said.

Krause didn’t realize this week’s power outage had hit his neighborhood because his backup power kicked in when his neighbors’ lights turned off. PG&E’s promise to cut power more frequently was one of the reasons he decided to install the system in February.

I don’t think solar panels make a difference. You don’t get the juice if the grid is down

Democrats can’t even keep the power on in California. Yet they claim they can run the whole economy and our energy industry! 😂😂😂

Nah. Just another Democratic Party success story.

If you think life with solar panels but no coal/gas/nuclear backup isn’t “painful” then you’re not very science-y.

How about all those electric cars? 😂🤣😂

Solar panels don't work in a blackout. They are connected to the utility company.

Oh geez. The AP is turning into CNN now.

And how many on oxygen died How much food will the working class have to replace because of this BS?

So, if we enacted the green agenda aoc wants then the poor would be hurt. That’s is always the case when progressive policies are enacted.

All part of the Agenda 21 plan.

Here's a divide: Manage the forests properly Build desalination plants and fleets of firefighting helicopters instead of a Train To Nowhere Stop electing Democrats.

California is a perfect example of what happens in all socialist idealogies. Homeless crisis, drugs, lawlessness and the rich get richer while the middle class and poor die

Well, get a better job then.

Ridiculous!

A chicken in every pot and a generator in every house!

Lots of folks finding out they can't charge their Prius when the get home from work because solar panels, without battery storage, don't work after sunset. I imagine there will be a run on car batteries soon.

So it's California. The governor will legislate that everybody gets solar panels, including the multitudes of homeless living in tents.

LOL yeah that’s the problem 😂

Tell the whole story - solar panels are connected to the grid so they don’t provide power during blackout unless one has system of inverters and batteries (few do), and manage to keep their own panels off-grid. As for generators, $5+/gal gas to operate.

1 Generators cost a couple hundred bucks. They're not luxuries available only to the wealthy. 2 Most people don't buy them because losing power for a day of two is an infrequent event and not that big a deal. Unless you're in California, I guess.

Or those that live in Silicon Valley

However, solar power panels have been known to cause fires

Solar panels don’t work during blackouts unless pared with batteries. Bloomberg News

Ah, green privilege.

What was the economic disparity among those who successfully sued and received compensation when the power was left on last time?
