Companies are sweetening perks to land tech workers, including a $250,000 signing bonus for an executive role

By Angus Loten Oct. 15, 2019 3:43 pm ET Six-figure bonuses, outsize equity stakes and the flexibility to work from just about anywhere: These are some of the perks companies are offering information-technology workers as they compete for talent in a tight labor market, job seekers and recruiters say.

Demand for these workers is growing as companies world-wide seek an edge over competitors by using technology such as cloud computing, data analytics and artificial intelligence. Global spending on these and other enterprise IT tools is expected to reach $3.79 trillion this year, up 1.1% from 2018, Gartner said.

“The biggest and strongest companies are…in some cases adding to their arsenal of tools to secure the right employees,” said Michael Solomon, co-founder and managing partner at 10x Ascend, an advisory firm for senior technology job seekers. She said the bonus came on top of an above-market compensation plan and the flexibility to work remotely from the client’s home in the Bay Area instead of relocating to the Chicago office.

Oh?

If only the giant corporations who rely on factory workers and farmhands and retail workers and health aides and drivers and the tens of millions of other working people started offering perks (like Walmart could offer “enough money to feed your kids without food stamps”)

I have an EE degree, 15 years experience in software engineering as well as aviation, I'll work for anyone willing to pay fair market rates. I'm in an office full of engineers willing to do the same...it's all about getting companies to actually pay full market rates.
