U.S. stocks opened with modest gains Thursday after U.K. and European Union leaders announced a draft agreement on Brexit and following a round of U.S. economic data and corporate earnings. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.34% rose 64 points, or 0.2%, to 27,065, while the S&P 500 SPX, +0.58% gained 14 points, or 0.5%, to 3,004. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.

70% traded at 8,174, up 50 points, or 0.6%. The Brexit agreement must be approved by all EU member states and faces a difficult hurdle in the U.K. parliament this weekend. Stock-index futures jumped following the announcement of the agreement but then saw gains fade. Shares of Netflix Inc. NFX, +4.35% were up 7.8% after delivering third-quarter results late Wednesday.
