Only 1% of passengers always tip their Uber drivers, a new study of 40 million rides found

Only about 16% of Uber rides receive tips, and only 1% of riders leave a tip for every single ride, the study found.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, highly rated drivers made more in tips than those with fewer stars, but those amounts began to slide even with averages that many would likely consider to still be premium. "In terms of magnitudes, drivers with a 5-star rating are tipped close to 50% more often than those with a 4.75 rating," the authors said, "and when they do receive tips they are nearly 5% higher.""Rider ratings represent a key demand-side explanatory variable," researchers said. "We find that, for example, riders who have a 5-star rating tip more than twice as often as those with a 4.75 rating, and when they do tip they tip nearly 14% more.

The researchers found data to back up her theory, too, saying that "tips tend to be highest for airport and business trips."

For years, Uber told passengers there was no need to tip. That mentality stuck, while the company’s fare structure changed and drivers’ income dwindled. We must reset the culture on rideshare gratuities.

I’ve done almost 3000 rides and this stat is true. Libtards love slavery

I also believe people who use Uber very frequently like probably once every day or once for every 2 days wouldn’t prefer to tip as this substantially increases their monthly expenditure on transportation!

.I don't use Uber much, but I'm in the 1% who ALWAYS tip; at least 20%. UBER & lyft drivers deserve more rights. I was happy to hear RepPeterDeFazio TransportDems promote their cause to as employees VS contractors this weekend at oregonsummit ORDems AFLCIO jwjnational

Damn, I finally made it to the top 1%

I used to get uber specifically because tip was included. I don’t want to do math drunk or tired. Tip culture is racist anyway

How do you not tip someone providing a service? They come to you, drive you somewhere safely and often provide water and phone charging. And it's usually cheaper, and smells better, than a cab.

You’re saying some services, no matter how poor or unsatisfactory, MUST be tipped? I’ll disagree. Over the years, I’ve experienced some terrific service from people who’ve refused to accept anything because ‘that’s against policy’. People get paid to do a job. Some do it better.

They don’t make it easy

1% on record, plenty give cash.
