Binder started seventh on the grid in Valencia, but shot straight to the front as soon as the race began. He proceeded to apply the pressure on race leader Thomas Luthi of Switzerland for most of the race. There was plenty at stake; Binder needed the win to finish ahead of Luthi in second in the overall standings. With two laps to go Binder finally overtook the Swiss racer and took the chequered flag for his third successive win of the season, and fifth overall.
