SIBU: Only reputable companies should be awarded contracts to provide security guards at schools, says Sarawak Consumer Protection Association complaints bureau chief Datuk Seri Law Ying Mee.

He said the tender calling for companies to provide guards closed on Oct 28 and the Education ministry should only give the three-year contracts to companies with good track records."The tender board should be very careful in awarding contracts for school security guards," he said.

"I have gone around the state and found out that about 90% of these companies are not paying up to RM1,400 to each of their securityHe added some companies forced guards to work 12-hour days, up to thirty days a month. He added some companies even unfairly asked the security guards to pay RM300 for their uniforms.

This is a real headache for guards serving in rural schools who have to pay the high cost of travelling to and from town to check if their salaries had been paid.
