Richard Edelman, CEO of Edelman, said he would appoint Black executives to his firm's operating committee and board by the end of the summer, while CEO Andy Polansky of ad holding company IPG's Constituency Management Group said top firms Weber Shandwick, Golin, and Current would each name at least one person of color to an executive role by the end of 2022.
DAA is an umbrella network of 10 PR trade organizations, including the three largest: Public Relations Society of America , PR Council, and Page. Paul said members also disagreed over fundraising strategy and whether participating organizations should make their diversity numbers public. Andrew McCaskill, a veteran Black PR executive who regularly discusses culture and economics on SiriusXM, said the DAA commitment is encouraging but that its language is "largely aspirational D&I boilerplate" and should go further in pledging to diversify leadership.
"Per the DAA's own tweets, less than 13% of PR practitioners are ethnic minorities," he said. "That model is destined to fail."Another bone of contention is that DAA hasn't had a big fundraising effort. Pat Ford said committee members agreed that all need to have "skin in the game" to create an organization that's leading the way in promoting diversity in PR.
Roger Bolton, president of Page, said his group had committed $25,000 to $30,000 to the DAA last year and would give up to $50,000 this year; he also planned to make a personal contribution.
