If you want to catch the eye of an editor, include "freelance pitch" in the subject line of your email, give your pitch a title that's in line with the publication's style, and keep it concise — don't go over two paragraphs to get your point across.Even after years of writing, pitching article ideas still makes me want to vomit.
Realistically, not every pitch is going to be something you're 100% proud of, but what I've learned is to just send it anyway — then study the crappiness of it to make yourself better with wording your pitches. Put "freelance pitch" in the subject because editors receive all kinds of stuff in their inboxes including PR pitches and you don't want to get looped into those. I also add "timely" or "full draft," so that they know what to expect.I use a title for my pitch that is of similar word length to article's that are already in that publication.
I also learned to look at the type of content that publications have under certain verticals. For example, publications that have travel verticals don't all provide listicles. Listicles are articles that list a certain number tied to the heading such as, "5 ways to get an upgrade for your flight." Without knowing the publication, you'd be pitching without much care and editors hate that .
