Stocks opened with modest gains Monday, as investors looked ahead to this week's virtual gathering of policy makers for an annual symposium that will be highlighted by a Friday speech from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.55% rose 187 points, or 0.5%, while the S&P 500 SPX, +0.57% was up 0.5% at 4,464.67. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.

83% advanced 0.5% to 14,795.51. The Kansas City Fed on Friday announced that its annual retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, would be held virtually because of health concerns created by the continued spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus. Powell is scheduled to deliver a speech on Friday that will be watched for clues to the timetable for the eventual tapering of asset purchases by the central bank.
