The gardens not only brings people together, she said, but gives them a place to contemplate together. Barnwell Brownlee's overarching goal for the institution since she took on the role amid a global pandemic and social movements across the nation has been to make it a place where people hope. Whether it’s a time of crisis or of beauty, she strives to make the Cummer a home of inspiration, comfort and consistency.
Taking the role on during such a tumultuous time created a space for her to set a tone for what the museum and its gardens could truly be.She says one of the most important aspects of her job as CEO now is to recognize that the Cummer is consistency building on an existing legacy of listening and being there for those in and around it.
“Stepping into this role, especially at this moment when there's an incredible awakening and an incredible reckoning in terms of great resignations, in terms of people really assessing how they wanted to spend their professional hours, how they wanted to spend their professional time,” she said. “So it gave me the opportunity to really think deeply and hear what matters.”
