If you feel that your organization or leadership isn’t showing public support or solidarity, know that you can advocate for what you believe in as a reporting manager. This can look like taking time out of your team meetings to address triggering news with your teams or setting up office hours to provide a space for people to share their feelings and thoughts.
It can be hard to approach a leader and initiate a conversation around an issue that’s causing you emotional distress. If you’re going through this, give yourself some grace. If you work in an environment that’s not conducive to conversations around inclusion and belonging, or if you work with a boss who is toxic, it’s okay to stay quiet or disengage. Likewise, if you don’t feel psychologically safe approaching your boss or other leaders, it’s okay to step back.
If you’re unable to speak up, even when you deeply care about something, it may reflect the culture you work in — not your personal beliefs and values. If you’re advocating for change and feel overwhelmed, remind yourself that you’re doing your best. Burnout in activism is real, so learn to look after yourself. Sometimes, doing that can be its own form of activism, especially if you come from marginalized or vulnerable communities.
Often times when advocating for change in the workplace, we put our own needs to the side for the collective good. This can lead to what is called “activist burnout.” Some of theinclude exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficacy. If you notice these signs creep in, don’t hesitate to connect with a decolonized therapist to work through your feelings, especially in circumstances where you may see increased violence against your community or identity.
