St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix and TMC Healthcare-Tucson both gained “high performing” status for maternity care in the magazine’s. A third hospital in the state — Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix — voluntarily opted to participate in the U.S. News survey, so it was listed but didn’t receive the designation.
In all, 297 hospitals out of the nearly 650 evaluated were considered by U.S. News as high performing. The magazine said its rating was based on objective measures of low-risk pregnancy care including C-section rates, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates and early elective delivery rates.
The changes might be responsible in part for the fact that the three hospitals on this year’s list represent a sizable drop from the 13 that were named last year, nine of which were considered high performing. Last year, St. Joseph’s did not have that designation.
