SINGAPORE - Health and beauty chain Watsons has said it does not have a no-sitting policy, in response to calls from employees and a workers’ rights group claiming that workers are not allowed to sit at their stations and have to stand for up to eight hours daily.
Workers Make Possible, along with a former Watsons employee, met Watsons management on Monday to discuss the issue, and also asked for workers to be given more frequent breaks. A Watsons employee, who declined to be named as she is still with the company, said she has bad aches and pain in her left leg - a result of being on her feet for hours on end.
These conditions pushed them to contact volunteer-run group Workers Make Possible, which began a campaign by putting up social media posts, among other things. The group also asked Watsons for a response in September.askST: What can you do if you are unhappy and feel trapped in your current job role?
Mr Kumarr said: “Not letting workers sit during long shifts is a very inhumane practice. It leads to many serious health issues such as varicose veins, insufficient blood flow, severe fatigue, immobility and damage to one’s joints and tendons to name a few.
So now all staffs can sit...But actually there is no chair for them to sit...
quite common in retail industry
If not happy just quite lah, complaint for what
Post pandemic it’s observed that people tend to get a little lazier & more whiney when they are asked to come back from WFH arrangements. Would recommend corporations organise trainings prepping staff for optimal post pandemic mentality.
They should be allowed to take a 5 to 10 minutes break to sit.
Well done! Corporate mgmt is just so out of touch with the ground
I think they are human. Not animals. They can sit ah. Basic human courtesy.
Yes, no written policy but verbal. This is common for some or most...Is this against any MOH occupational safety?
I don’t see the issues here.. used to work in retail, 12 hours shift when 2 breaks for lunch and dinner.. no chairs to sit and u just stand on your shift. This is retail ..
There can’t be smoke without fire…🤔🤔🤔
Should all them to work for home. After all, implement the system where customers do self checkout. Then no need for staff to stand.
