Mason said city documents show Dynamic is specifically obligated to provide public access to an on-site restaurant and the Guild’s city-owned art collection and to offer community centre space that can be rented at affordable city-set rates.Dynamic did initially open a restaurant at the inn, but D’Uva said it was shut down after it didn’t attract enough customers. The site continues to host special events like Christmas brunches and Father’s Day barbecues.
Asked about the “private property” signs, D’Uva says the company posted them because teens were hanging around and causing trouble. He also said the company is liable if anyone is injured at the property, and the company erected the signs “for insurance purposes.” He acknowledged that while Dynamic is technically supposed to run a restaurant at the inn, there’s no point in the city forcing a company to operate a business that isn’t viable. But he said he’s working with city staff to review other aspects of the agreement, including whether the rates Guild Inn Estates charges for community rental space are comparable to city fees.
