Zebra meat should be on the braai, say Stellenbosch animal scientists.

The new findings come as the government puts the finishing touches to SA’s new game meat strategy, which aims to formalise, transform and expand an industry dominated by impala, springbok, kudu, wildebeest and blesbok.

When student Angelique Myburgh realised little research had been done into zebras as a source of food, she launched her study with the assistance of lecturer Helet Lambrechts and the then-head of Stellenbosch’s animal sciences department, Louw Hoffman. Offal is a low-cost, nutrient-rich protein, says Myburgh, and part of the traditional diet for most South Africans, meaning the contribution from zebras has the potential to improve food security, especially in rural areas.

BISouthAfrica I like it's steak.

BISouthAfrica I Rember back when I was in school, and the rumor spur burgers had zebra in them, and they were delicious. On the other hand, horse meat smells horrible when its cooked (boiled) so who knows.

BISouthAfrica You're 24% right ✊🏽

BISouthAfrica Well, it's not black and white.

And horse

BISouthAfrica Most people will hate me for saying this... But clealry the weather is changing, climate change wasn't a myth! Covid happened due to animal suffering... When will we learn? Let's educate ourselves... Let's stop eating meat!

BISouthAfrica I don't quite know how I feel about this. My head says yeah it makes sense. My heart says but it's like eating my dog, then my head says but u eat ostrich....

BISouthAfrica This is a photo of a rare Cape Mountain zebra. There are only 1300 left in South Africa. Why must they be killed and eaten by humans? 😳😭
