May is part of a group of business owners and restaurateurs in the area who are hoping the name brings attention.
“With all of the things that have happened to the downtown core, from COVID to truckers, we feel it’s important to keep the profile of the downtown front of mind for folks, to remind them they live in a beautiful city,” he says.
That's so fetch.
Sometimes Open Patronage Area
EaPa and WePa next? Get some events, a new attraction, transit and clear parking options and ppl will come. Right now unless visiting friends it’s just a hassle to go SoPa!
I don’t really see the downside to this and am not understanding why the reaction is so negative. Why not give the neighborhood/local businesses a chance to market the area like it never has before. Lots of annual festivals and great restaurants in this district.
They need to hire a new marketing consultant.
I thought that was the parking lot area
To make it simple, just call it South Park
Oh yea.. I'm all aflutter with excitement about a boring dead downtown area. SoPa! It just rolls off the tongue.
LaMe
Stop trying to make SoPa happen. Its not gonna happen.
Pronounced Soap- ah? Pass
Weak
There is no intelligent life in that city
The over-funded 'charity' neighbourhood will be WEpa.
Very cool, can’t wait to visit.
how about 'NoBy', not Byward
How about FuPa? Food under parliament? 😂
National joke here we come lol
Jesus fucking christ.
National joke here we come.
Ugg...just awful
Ugg... just awful
I call it the barren grey canyons of Albert and Slater.
How about Homeless Alley with a tint of weed?
Seriously! Just make sparks st a legit tourist destination!? Makes no sense that no one wirh decision making power can figure this out?
I prefer to think of it as 'the Sparks Street wastelands'
They should call it GhoTow. Nobody wants to go down there anymore.
Spark street is dead and so will SoPa
No one is calling it that.
Call it NoPa = 'No Parking'
Subpar
Still not going to frequent the area….saving my dollars for my own community….
This is literally a South Park joke
Love the idea, but surprised that no one has yet pointed out that 'sopa' means 'soup' in Spanish...seems an odd name for a neighbourhood
I think this is a great idea! Good branding for an area that otherwise gets lumped into Centretown. Good visibility for those businesses I think 🙂
First they need to get some unique business and more forms of entertainment…. It’s dead there after 4pm
That’s SoPa-thetic.
Definitely South Park inspired when they came up with this name.
Why can't Ottawa come up with any ideas of its own, instead of copying NYC?
'SoHill' has a certain ring to it.
Merch available soon on a ShOPA store
Laughed so hard at this.
