More density. Taller buildings. Development along transit corridors. And, yes, more housing on the West Side.'s new plan to meet lofty new goals for housing production over the next eight years. She is introducing an executive order to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to accomplish some of the goals. Others will need board or, in some cases, voter approval.
"It's one thing to get the Housing Element passed on account of our Board of Supervisors, and it's another to implement the various policies necessary to achieve the goal of building 82,000 units over the next eight years," Breed said. New legislation to create new financing opportunities for pipeline projects that have been unable to advance due to financing constraints, which will be advanced by the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and the City Controller's office by Feb. 14.
Thao, who was elected as Oakland's new mayor last year and inaugurated last month, said she shares Breed's vision on housing when it comes to increasing production in Oakland. "The ways in which we actually help take care of our unhoused population is to build, build, build," said Thao, adding that her administration is focused on building"affordable and deeply affordable housing."
"The unique opportunity in Oakland right now is that the mayor is able to work with the City Council, and we are all pretty much on the same page," she said."That is important because it creates a thriving environment of getting things done."
