The government agencies are also advised to return all correspondences that are not written in Bahasa Malaysia.Additionally, Anwar pointed out that this directive does not put the usage of English aside. He said English is still used as the international trade language, but Bahasa Malaysia as the national language should be used as part of nation-building. I remind my friends that I would not have lectured at Washington University if I had not mastered the English language.

Bahasa Malaysia is recognized as the national language under Article 152 of the Federal Constitution, and its position is also specified in the National Language Act 1967.
