Some argue the long-awaited shakeup of live export rules released this week does not go far enough, while others warn they go too far and threaten the industry's future.

"It won't be very long before the principles of these companies start making the decision that it isn't worthwhile," he said.

Australia's largest and oldest animal welfare charity said the review falls short on key animal welfare issues. "The final report falls short on the big issues that will make a real difference to animal welfare, like stocking densities that actually allow the animals to lie down at the same time over these 3-4 week-long journeys, rather than expecting them to 'time-share' the floor space," he said.

"The science is telling us that it is just not possible for the sector to continue while also meeting science-based, community expectations on animal welfare," he said. One of the big changes in the new standards is the introduction of an allometric approach to sheep stocking density. The allometric approach considers the animals' ability to lay down and have comfortable space, meaning there will be about 30 per cent more space for sheep aboard live export vessels.

Good. Just ban the sick disgusting cruel trade.

Get RID OF LIVE EXPORT FOREVER!

...EVERYTHING is being regulated out of existence.

live exporters think animal welfare is over regulation ...we thought so.

Treating sentient life with callous disdain should not be profitable.

Good, it needs to be regulated out of existence.

Great news!

Good.

Good! They're finally getting it 🙄

Just wait. Watch how this is turned into Labor destroying their industry.

👏👏👏👍👍👍

Aw shucks.

Now that's not a bad thing

'...before the principles of these companies start...' I think you mean 'principals'

Good

DanaScully2 Good. Live export has cost us thousands of jobs in meatworks

DanaScully2 Think that's the whole idea.....

Good

If it is not possible to carry out this industry without cruelty. It is not possible,.

This vile cruel industry can't end soon enough it is definitely on its last legs but in the meantime no thanks to D_LittleproudMP animals are still suffering because of greed & lack of compassion but thanks to billshortenmp it will be over very soon

The export trade failed to export humanly... now your getting done for you and it should go further if they fail again

Good

Think animal welfare!

Need to keep the live export

At BillShortenTownHall last night listening to the supercharged next PM where he confirmed that Labor will phase out the live sheep trade. Regulated out of existence indeed. What you're hearing is this vile trade's last dying whimpers. Funny that. They're specialists.

Live export industry says it's being 'regulated out of making an obscene profit while torturing animals.'

Oh I thought they were all about improving animal welfare? WAPastoralists WAFarmers Stop the whining. These new regs don’t go far enough.

Good!

The sooner the better the greed and animal cruelty is shameful for Australia.

Good. We decided to stop selling our sheep to the boats years ago after seeing what happened to them. I cannot comprehend how any farmer who cares for their stock can still be doing it.

Good.

I thought that there would be less to export anyway, due to the drought and recent devastating floods

So, the industry is threatened because it is not able to provide for the humane treatment of the animals it exports. Do you think any manufacturer would or should survive if it made a product that had a real chance of killing you if you used it?

Good - more regulation only required because you pushed the boundaries big time.

Good! Change your business model then! And we even should go further!
