“It’s irresponsible, it’s reckless, and it’s careless,” Matt Maisel, City of Harrisburg spokesperson, said after the City of Harrisburg’s Council voting against a Harrisburg-based construction company to do reconstruction on the Broad Street Market’s Brick building. In a statement, Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams said because of city council, the year-anniversary of the fire will come and go without any work being completed.
Harrisburg City Council voted 5-2 on Tuesday to reject Alexander Building Construction company for the rebuild of the Broad Street Market.During the meeting, Council President Danielle Bowers said the company chosen should be a better reflection of the diversity of Harrisburg. She also said miscommunication between the proposer and council led to their decision to vote against Alexander.
Maisel said the City Administration is extremely frustrated with the decision by council to vote against Alexander. “Alexander had the highest price point of their proposals because they’re the most qualified. They’re the most experienced. They have experience with historic building architecture. They have experience extensively doing fire restoration on buildings,” Maisel said.
Chair of the Broad Street Market Alliance Eric Hagarty said he feels like the market is caught in between the politics of the city and city council.“We’re sort of in the middle of this debate between the mayor’s office and city council, and we’re hopeful that everyone can come together and reach an amicable conclusion so we can get the building underway again,” Hagarty said.Maisel said puts back the start of construction back by at least four to six months.
