The community gathered to commemorate the first anniversary of the devastating fire at the Usindiso Building.A sombre evening in the inner city of Johannesburg. As survivors, families, and community members gathered outside the Usindiso building commemorating one year since the deadly blaze.“I woke up and saw people running. There was smoke everywhere. I jumped from the window and broke three ribs,” says Sihle Dube.
Siphamandla Sibiya says, “The event is expected to be held from four to seven at the site. Survivors, families, and community members will gather to honor the memories. They are also gathering in support and solidarity for the continuous struggles many are still facing.”“I lost everything in the fire. My sister took care of me and gave me money. Staying in another building is also mad,” says Dube.
“I’m staying behind the building. It’s unsafe; community groups lambasted the snail’s pace of government in dealing with hijacked buildings,” says Sibiya.
