Australia's catastrophic bushfires and the smoke haze blanketing major cities have sparked concerns among international students, presenting a risk for an industry that has become the country's third most valuable export.

The sector's concerns will be up for discussion at a roundtable meeting convened by Education Minister Dan Tehan in Canberra on Wednesday. The gathering will look at concerns about the impact of bushfires throughout education, including early childhood and schools."We are also monitoring the situation and developing a communications strategy to let the world know that Australia is open for business and continues to offer a world-leading education," he said.

While only a tiny number of education providers have been directly threatened by bushfires, the smoke haze has emerged as a particular concern among many Asian students and their families. Institutions have been forced to tackle concerns expressed by the overseas education agents that send the vast majority of students.

"We have international students who are worried about what's going on in Australia ... I think some of the worry is the air pollution. People have seen the pictures of the red sky."

northway_debbie It used to be the 1 export, until the govt shifted financial support from education to coal mining.

Something for the royal commission ScottyfromMarketing says he’ll set up?

Silver lining....

As someone who has had experience with numerous international students the racism they experience in Australia is having far more impact than air quality.

A word to international students who are concerned about air quality: go home.

Most international students come from infested environments so why should they worry over a bit of smoke?

davidbewart GGsackthelibsnow we know who caused this disaster.

Another SMH tweet unrelated to the story. The story refers to the issue of misinformation and maps exaggerating the level of burns. The rest is what some academics think. No supporting information. Whilst I can understand there may be some concern it will disappear quickly.

the bush fires have been costing us billions in farm losses 3mils hectares burned million of animals died so coal miners need to pay carbon tax In EU they have carbon tax

Whoever wrote that article must not own a passport! I mean come on how naive is the author!

Fake news, it's just like their homes, won't matter 1 iota.

Meanwhile Scott Morrison rules out ClimateAction on causes of ClimateChange content with only addressing impacts. auspol BushFireCrisisAustralia
