Do you know where your wine comes from? What about your beer or liquor?
It’s difficult for people of color to get started in the alcohol industry because gaining funding for your brand is all about who you know, Summers says. “Just yesterday I had someone in my tasting room, and I'm welcoming them and I'm talking about the wines,” she says, “and one of the folks in that party just says, 'Oh, like what do you do, assist the winemaker here?' ”
Alcohol companies that already have a Black audience need to use those faces in their marketing and advertising, Frichette says. Doing so will help acclimate people to the idea that Black people are leaders in this industry, which will help create a pathway for representation, Summers adds. That’s because Black people don’t have the privilege of thinking their accomplishments are exceptional, he says. He points to the example of his father, a pianist who played with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and others.
hereandnow But when you're standing at the store with all those bottles in front of you, you don't know who made them. It's not a race issue, don't make it one.
DemiDlamini hereandnow I absolutely love stories like this!! Victors Thank you for shining a light on these two success stories.
hereandnow Wait.. government regulation makes it harder for minorities with less generational wealth to start businesses? Who would have thought 😱
hereandnow Photo is of Shae Frichette. Please tweet with better intro next time, NPR.
hereandnow So, financing is the barrier to black people going into the alcoholic beverages industry? Financing is the barrier to going into any business! 🙄

hereandnow Duck is there anything white people didn’t rig 🤣🤣🤣 Man no wonder mediocrity and incompetence is the norm in America in all places of power/wealth 🤣🤣
hereandnow Wow! 2011?
hereandnow What are the racial backgounds of other 'liquor' license producers? How about Carribean rum prodercers? Mexican tequila producers? Are they racist and exclusionists? Why is everything racist to Progressive WBUR? Maybe WBUR is the racist? Hatespeech disgiused as enlightenment
hereandnow This goes for whites too!
hereandnow Good for them - Blacks have to catch up in economic status - open more opportunities for all ethnics !!
hereandnow Wow. That's shocking. I've read that African Americans were integral to making Kentucky bourbon in the early days, in many cases it was slaves who held the knowledge of bourbon-making and passed on family recipes. But you won't find this in most bourbon books or documentaries.
hereandnow Congratulations 🍾
hereandnow Question: What is today's NPR small business hero fighting against? (Pick only one) - onerous litigation - crime/theft/vandals - gov't regs. - racism/sexism Hmmmm...🙄
hereandnow Cc: thesophislife Good article.
hereandnow And yet she did it. Good on her! America is the land of opportunity for all.
hereandnow This is awesome. Keep breaking down those barriers
hereandnow “I am more than the laborer. I am more than the factory worker,” he says. “I am the idea. I am the concept. And at the end of the day, I'm the person that says yes or no. So if you don't know how to deal with me, you have to adjust.” i read this part in Elon musk's voice
hereandnow So
hereandnow Maybe you should be asking why the Government puts so many barriers in the way for ANYONE to make and sell liquor.
