MANILA - Sen.

Cynthia Villar on Thursday shared how her family's gravel and sand business grew into one of the Philippines' largest real estate empires, saying that it was a product of hard work, and not political favors.

Mr. Villar - a University of the Philippines alumnus, and now among the richest Filipino - founded Camella Homes in 1973, according to information from the Vista Land website. He ran for the Philippine presidency in 2010 but lost to former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III. "We became big because we went public. We went abroad and borrowed money... So, it's really investment from abroad," she said."We went into government because my father was a mayor for 22 years," Villar shared."Parang pinamana sa amin na parang we could not resist or say no," she said. Her father, Filemon Aguilar, was Las Piñas mayor in the 1960s until the late 80s, and also served as the city's congressional representative for some time.
