Cheng Lu, CEO of the autonomous-truck startup, graduated from Harvard Business School in 2010, and said it looks for evidence of leadership in applicants, as well as perspectives or experiences that set them apart from their peers. That means it's important to make the most of your first years after college, Lu said.
"You have two, three, years of work to really establish yourself," Lu said. "Challenge yourself to do the best to maximize those two, three years." Lu said his post-college jobs on Wall Street gave him an up-close view of the 2008 financial crisis that Harvard may have found appealing. After graduating from the University of Virginia in 2005 with degrees in computer science and economics, Lu worked as an investment-banking analyst at Citigroup.
Lu joined TuSimple as its CFO in 2019 and was named CEO in October 2020. The startup is developing automated-driving technology for semi trucks and has made deliveries for UPS in Arizona and Texas. TuSimple plans to expand its delivery network in the coming years and begin selling autonomous trucks made through a partnership with Navistar by 2024.
