The pandemic has exposed the impact of 20 years of turning higher education into a marketplace and students into increasingly dissatisfied customers

Manchester Metropolitan University students, obliged to isolate in their halls after Covid outbreaks on campus. Now, with the latest lockdown, students have been asked not to return. For many, though, it is impossible to work away from the university, not least because they left their books and belongings in their rooms before the Christmas holidays, when the government’sUnsurprisingly, students are protesting.

Publishers were already trying their best to break University Library budgets. See ebooksos for the crazy situation escalating throughout Covid teaching. Media or politicians never interested though.

Pity no Scotland perspective. Probably, because Scottish undergrad students don't pay tuitionfees?

we can't buy core textbooks for students during a pandemic as exploitative publishers are charging £450+ for a single user ebook where hardcopy costs £39. gov ignored our open letter from nearly 3000 staff + students asking for investigation ebooksos

i think snidely charging students who are then denied the promised face to face education, imprisoned in their tiny little flats and overcharged for shit food may have had some impact in ongoing trust with their alma mater.

Any comments on this from a Scotland perspective? Is it different in Scotland? If so, how is it different? Discuss.

Is independent/remote learning under-developed? Can it lower carbon emissions, boost economy and save learner’s money? It could break universities and they do provide people with well paid jobs, but are they really effective in the current form and under these circumstances?

This aligns with my experience of a Uni mentioned. A great u/g experience in 1990s, I returned as a mature p/g then lecturer in 2010s. The decline in standards & care was shocking, profit was all that mattered. I left for EU HEIs. Not perfect, but far superior in all respects.

Did the same happened in US?

Students have been ripped off for decades and currently, they are deserving of compensation and refunds 100%. Something must be done about this now.

Government mishandling and incompetence is not the fault of the free market or universities. Switching to online learning on a government whim created the need for new software, practices and support almost overnight. Be glad the lockdowns occurred now and not 2000.

A large number of Universities aren't universities, they're simply graduate factories of indeterminate quality that trade on reputation (actual or implied) for foreign students. QUB - once a very good university - now flies in planes full of Chinese students DURING A PANDEMIC

They broke themselves.

Not only the UK, apparently every other part of the world like those past pandemic era possibly

In their current form, they need breaking. They’re a criminal enterprise, in many cases. Young people should be doing something more useful with heir time and money.
