News Corp to Buy Investor’s Business Daily for $275 Million

Investor’s Business Daily was founded by William J. O’Neill in 1984 with the goal of offering highly granular information he felt wasn’t available in major business publications like the Journal to help individual investors choose stocks and funds. The paper changed its name to Investor’s Business Daily in 1991.from daily to weekly.

News Corp, which owns the Journal, HarperCollins Publishers and news organizations in the U.K. and Australia, among other assets, has focused on growing its digital-subscriber base. That strategy has helped the company weatherThe company’s Dow Jones unit has been a strong performer in recent quarters. Dow Jones publications hit a milestone of 4 million total subscriptions, 3 million of which were digital, in the quarter ended Dec. 31. The Journal averaged 3.

Dow Jones CEO Almar Latour said the deal “creates exciting possibilities to grow quality at scale, diversify our tailored digital offerings and forge even deeper connections with the professional and retail investment communities.” News Corp said it expects to complete the acquisition during its fiscal fourth quarter, which ends June 30.
