Price reductions or promotions offering the first few months of a lease rent-free have become more common as Canadians working remotely move outside major cities or take advantage of low interest rates to buy properties of their own."Renters' power right now is higher than it has ever been," said David Fleming, a realtor with the Bosley Toronto Realty Group Inc.
The site said asking price for a one-bedroom rental property fell by 19.4 per cent in Toronto year-over-year. In neighbouring North York, Ont. it was a 15.6 per cent drop and 14 per cent in Richmond Hill, Ont. "I was kicking myself the whole time if I would have waited like a month, I would have probably seen a drop in how much I was paying," the Toronto woman said.
Fleming said the deals can also be advantageous for landlords because if they don't renegotiate, they could end up stuck in a situation where their tenants refuses to pay rent and won't leave.
