Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Thursday, Dec. 30, said he is hoping that private companies will also follow the Supreme Court mandamus ruling following the successful rehabilitation of the Manila Zoo.“So, I’m happy that the City of Manila through Manila Zoo is a compliant facility to the DENR’s requirement and to the mandamus issued by the Supreme Court.
“Kasi kung ‘yung pamahalaang Lungsod na ng Maynila ay isinara ‘yung pasilidad inayos, at ngayon bukas na pero sumusunod na alituntunin. Sana ganun dun ‘yung ilan nating kababayan na negosyante na may mga properties or businesses along the bay ,” he pointed out. On Dec. 18, 2008, the Supreme Court issued a mandamus on Manila Bay directing 13 government agencies “to clean up, rehabilitate, and preserve Manila Bay, and restore and maintain its waters to SB level to make them fit for swimming, skin-diving, and other forms of contact recreation.” The Manila Zoo was among the establishments inspected by the DENR after its officials admitted that they do not have a sewage treatment plant.
The soft opening of the nearly five-hectare New Manila Zoo, now known as the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden, was held on Thursday, Dec. 30, with the workers who helped build it and their families as special guests. The redeveloped Manila Zoo will have new facilities such as a museum, a restaurant, a veterinary hospital, new animal habitats, a coffee shop, and a new parking area.
