Crossbench MPs Kylea Tink and Dr Sophie Scamps have supported calls from business to fast-track skilled migration as a means of tackling the skills crisis.

Independent MPs Zoe Daniel, Zali Steggall, Dai Le, Helen Haines, Rebekah Sharkie and Kylea Tink have all expressed an interest in attending Labor’sin September while others including Andrew Wilkie, Dr Sophie Scamps and Greens leader Adam Bandt said the parliamentary crossbench should be represented.

Ms Daniel wants to see pensioners more easily return to the workforce as well as increased skilled migration. But she added that women of the “sandwiched generation”, who look after both children and elderly parents, needed more childcare support so they could work as much as they wanted.“Childcare needs to be universal, but also flexible.

“Once we get those people working, then we can look at the numbers of people to bring in. But we have to be mindful of how much pressure this puts on local infrastructure and the housing market,” Ms Le told theMayo MP Rebekah Sharkie, who says her electorate has one of the lowest housing vacancy rates in the country, with some listings receiving up to 150 applications, shared Ms Le’s concern about ramping up skilled migration.

Indi MP Helen Haines also said the housing shortage was adding headaches faced by regional employers already low on staff, with the two issues linked to each other.“Some businesses are choosing between investing in growing their business or buying accommodation to house their workforce. The skills shortage cannot be addressed without addressing housing,” she said.
