JOHANNESBURG - Local tobacco manufacturers say they are worried that the new bill aimed at curbing smoking could have the opposite effect.
Independent tobacco manufacturers in the country believe that over-regulating the tobacco industry could impact the economy, leading to possible job losses and gives more power to the black market. But the calls for further amendments to tobacco laws appear to have widened the gap between public health interests and the interests of the industry.
"Arguments are made by both sides, with the tobacco industry stating they contribute approximately R15 billion by way of excise taxes. The anti-smoking lobby group estimates that the cost to the healthcare system to be about R45 billion."
khanya_mntambo The ANC is trying to get complete control over the people! This is NOT going to happen.. will a peaceful Zuma type March be a solution ..just asking.. fokoffANC you must stop trying to control the people they are getting GATVOL and you are killing the economy! Hello 2024
khanya_mntambo DLZ created the Black market during lockdown with her ban. This new proposed law will give black markets an even bigger slice. Banning smoking ares in Restaurants , Casinos and other entertainment areas will lead to job losses. I will eat at home and gamble online tsekANC
khanya_mntambo The Government does not know WTF they are doing! Jobs will be lost when Restaurants lose their smoking ares. . Same goes for Casino's and other entertainment areas. ppl will gamble on line & smoke at home. When ANC pays my bond & car they can tell me what to do. the must (fokof)
khanya_mntambo Is there not an objective with smoking regulations to strengthen the black market? It sure as heck seems that way to me. When more than 50% of cigarettes sold are obviously black market and this has continued for years - one must make a conclusion
