The more ChildCareGroup learned about the two-generation approach, the more its leadership team realized the strategy was something the organization already does. from the Aspen Institute’s Ascend Network. The family-centered approach links early childhood education, health and wellbeing, postsecondary education and employment pathways, economic assets and social capital together to help lift families out of poverty.
ChildCareGroup is a Dallas non-profit organization aiming to teach children and parents, assist families and train early childhood professionals. The 121-year-old agency works to end intergenerational poverty and supports over 50,000 children, parents and child care professionals each year. “We have an intake specialist at every Workforce Center in Dallas County, so it’s the perfect opportunity for parents to go in,” Anderson said. “They can go to a resource room, build their resumes, get support services or gas vouchers, and then come over to us to get their child care set up. You can’t go to work if you don’t have child care, and you can’t keep your job if you don’t have good child care because you’re going to be worrying all the time about your children.
There are only about 93 seats certified in Texas Rising Star, the state’s only quality rating and improvement system, for every thousand low-income children, Children at Risk reported. In Dallas County, 85% of low-income households live in a Texas Rising Star desert. Part of ChildCareGroup’s role is to help change policy at the state level, Anderson said. About 12 years ago, the agency helped form a group now called the North Texas Early Education Alliance.
“When we start to think with a frame of what families need to be successful, they need us to remove barriers,” Mannes said. “They need us to make it easier for them to access the programs and services they need because they want to work. They love their kids as much as we all love them, and they want to do their best. But sometimes systems make it harder.”
