Based on 2020 election results, the 15th was the closest congressional contest in Texas this year. Former President Donald Trump won there by less than 3 percentage points.De La Cruz first ran for the seat two years ago, when she came within 3 percentage points of unseating incumbent U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez of McAllen.
In the 28th district, incumbent U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat, faced his toughest re-election bid yet from Republican Cassy Garcia, a former staffer for U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz. But he is expected to secure another term, counting about 56 percent of the vote with about three-quarters of precincts reporting.
