The world’s first “smart gun” hit the market Thursday, complete with a life-saving fingerprint unlocking system that prevents “unauthorized” people such as kids and criminals from firing it.
As gun control legislation remains largely stalled in the US, the innovation could help prevent everything from “We’re not claiming that the Biofire Smart Gun is going to prevent every instance of firearm misuse. But we do believe this tool can help prevent some firearm suicides, accidents, and injuries from occurring,” Kloepfer said.”If our work saves even one child’s life, it will be worth it.
In a recent survey, more than 40% of US kids said they could get ahold of their parents’ “secured” guns within two hours, according to a 2021That data — along with a reported boom in gun sales in 2020 — show the importance of “securing firearms” and “preventing theft,” company reps said.
It’s just as fallible as the face and thumbprint recognition on smart phones. Only this fallibility could get you killed.
I shoot left handed. I see a problem. Imagine something goes bump in the night and this is what you see...
One of my cell phones uses fingerprints to allow access. I typically have to reset the fingerprint every two to three weeks. Also, the thing costs two to three times what a typical 9mm pistol does. It's starting out in a pretty deep hole

First replace all police officer sidearms with this.
Hold on attacker, my gun needs a firmware update
I need that
only 12,000 ways this goes wrong
Think of the last time thumbprint ID failed on your smartphone. Now imagine somebody’s trying to kill you. 🤨
should be tested with dirty fingers, oily fingers, bloodied fingers, dropped weapon in dirt, etc. no doubt out of the box with owner's clean hands it would work, maybe. in dangerous situation wouldn't want to rely on fingerprint or facial recognition where seconds count.
Will be worst selling gun ever.
This isn't nessasary
My phone gives me a difficult time to unlock sometimes but ya I want a gun that does the same thing when I need it. What a joke. Shame on glock for even making it.
what happens when your spouse is alone at home and needs it
Give it to the cops. Let's see how it works for them.
If the tech is as shitty as my phone you'd be dead before it read your print correctly 🙄.
Great idea to keep guns away from kids and the bad guys, but not sure I'd want one when I really need to protect myself...
I thought this technology was already available for years?
Only “$1,500.”
'We're sorry, your recently posts on social media, particularly your use of 'based' has locked you out of use of this weapon'
No one will buy it because there is a chance of failure at the moment you need it most.
This is incredibly stupid! I have a hard enough time opening my phone with a fingerprint for a timely photo,
God forbid that system lets you down at that critical moment.
I donate plasma, and they use fingerprint check-in. It's amazing how often people have trouble checking in. Dry skin, slight damage to fingertip, dirty sensor (that's a frequent one), etc. In a life or death situation where you may have been fighting? No thanks.
Metal Gear Solid IRL
Ok but can I change ammo types with voice commands?
If this were practical, police would have deployed it ages ago.
DONT TRUST IT!! Buy a Revolver
Just like flashlights, when you really need it the batteries will be dead.
Yeah as often as my phone won't unlock, that's something I really want on my gun 🙄
I am, The Law! judgedredd
Basically all I read is “gun certain to fail hits the market” Buy a biometric safe and use it for a while then tell me how confident you’ll be in this for protection.
