South Africa's first consumer class action lawsuit has cleared its final appeal, paving the way for a trial against a dozen websites accused of tricking users into signing up for unwanted debit orders.
Last month, the Constitutional Court rejected an appeal to certify Stellenbosch University's law clinic as the legal representative for hundreds of South Africans who had their bank accounts debited after visiting loan websites. The websites - with names such as Loan Hub SA, Loan Locator SA and Loan Spotter SA - appeared to offer internet users help in finding online loans.
