Against this bleak backdrop, it is no longer just parents with money who help their children escape the rental trap but parents who have almost paid off their mortgages deciding to remortgage later in life in order to help their kids buy. They are not cash rich and so are getting themselves back into debt to help their offspring.
Siblings, too, are reportedly stepping in to help one another. This is again fine – until one sibling’s needs change. I recently spoke to a man in his early thirties who owns his flat with his two brothers. None of them currently lives there, as they all live with their partners elsewhere. Best-case scenario, one of the brothers is likely to start a family soon and need their equity out of the home.
