The cast and crew of Congo Square Theatre Company pose for a photo during the first rehearsal of “Welcome to Matteson!,” which runs from Sept. 6 to Oct. 1 in Abbott Hall at Northwestern University’s downtown campus.
Performances are 7 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 2 p.m. Saturdays-Sundays, with no 2 p.m. performance Sept. 9.“I grew up in Chicago,” said Los Angeles-based playwright Craig-Galván. “I moved to Park Forest around the time that the residents of Cabrini-Green were being relocated into various places. Years later, I saw online a flyer that had been distributed by someone saying, ‘Do you want these people moving into your neighborhood?,’ with a hand-drawing of a burglar sneaking into a window.
“It’s a play that looks at our values and what we hold as important. And how far people are willing to go to protect that,” Craig-Galván said. Regina smashes that stereotype for everyone who lived in that housing project. Roston said that Regina tells her dinner hosts, “Cabrini is the same people that you interact with, just different experiences, just different tax brackets, just different access.”
“It’s about a very troubling recent past of the city when the projects all around the city — particularly in this play Cabrini-Green — were shuttered and all those folks were displaced all around the surrounding areas outside of the city. This play revisits that recent history through a lens of comedy that allows us to observe what happened but also have a dialogue about how that affected our communities.
