Lameez Omarjee 24 Feb 2019 15:59 Comments Coal is still very much part of South Africa’s energy mix, given the abundance of the mineral, Energy Minister Jeff Radebe has said. The minister held a briefing on Independent Power Producers in Pretoria on Sunday. He addressed concerns of job losses in the coal sector, which have been attributed to the introduction of IPPs. According to the minister, this is not the case.
” President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced the unbundling of Eskom into three entities – generation, transmission and distribution. The unbundling would see more competition introduced in the generation sector in the form of IPPs, which some unions have opposed, as they believe it would lead to massive job losses in the coal sector. Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has told the National Assembly that government is embarking on a consultation process with labour.
This doesn't fit the Zuma kleptocratic narrative, ESKOM is too big a piggy-bank for the kleptocrats
