Involvement for Academy duo Calum Scanlon and Luke Chambers against Toulouse on Thursday night would be the perfect way to celebrate three years of Liverpool's training ground, writes Keifer MacDonald

Regardless of the result, Thursday will be another proud night for all involved in the running of Liverpool's academy.

Melwood had been Liverpool's home for over 60 years with the legendary Bill Shankly leading the Reds' move from previously training on the Anfield grass to a place they could call home. In the years following Shankly's shock resignation in 1974, Boot Room icons Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan as well as Rafa Benitez and most recently Jurgen Klopp all masterminded European Cup success at the club's West Derby base.

Although the iconic base had become famed for a stellar production line of talent during its prime with names like Phil Thompson, Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard and more recently Trent Alexander-Arnold progressing right the way through the club's ranks, a site that could accommodate both the first team and the youth sides was viewed as critical to ensuring to club's academy continued to deliver.

“I think pre-season shows how many boys can go up there and kind of equip themselves in a good way. It's only bricks and mortar, but I think what is important is the people. I think the more people you can get in the same place, the more conversations and the better the work that can be done.” During that time, Tyler Morton, Kaide Gordon, Bobby Clark, Stefan Bajcetic, Ben Doak and Jarell Quansah have all been handed maiden appearances in the Premier League.

"Walking into Kilmarnock, I think it was a bit different because jobs were on the line and it was kind of a different environment," said Chambers recently, discussing his experience of fighting relegation with Killie. "When I was 18 walking into a dressing room like that, it was a brilliant eye-opener for me.
