Stepping into Villa Camilla, the grand and eclectic home of iconic fashion designer Camilla Franks, feels like being transported into another realm.
“I wanted a place that felt like my own sanctuary, a place where I could splash my silks and get inspired,” Franks says. “I usually have the sage burning and this space is meant to invoke escapism.” “After that I jump into bed with Luna and wake her up, then friends come over and a lot of cooking happens. Then there’s a swim in the pool and it’s pizza making time.”Franks, a born-again homebody, says her days of all-night fashion industry benders are long gone.Franks’ Bohemian cave of wonders is full of abstract art, quirky furniture, tribal masks and idols, floral urns and various objet d’art that serve as a creative muse.
“Everyone who walks into this home is like ‘wow’, with a sense of wonder, excitement and childhood curiosity,” says Franks, unfazed by the suggestion her bold aesthetic might narrow the buyer pool. After founding the Camilla brand 20 years ago in Bondi, Franks says the move feels like “coming full circle” back to the place where she “gave birth to her brand”. But this time, she also brings her six-year-old daughter and “tiny best friend” Luna, and a lot more self-assuredness.“I wish I could go back to that barefoot Bohemian that worked 24/7 and let her know that everything was going to be OK.
