Service Director Nino Piccoli recently asked the finance committee to increase the city’s expenditure to Rocco Masonry by $20,000. He explained that Rocco Masonry is doing concrete work throughout the city, but this additional $20,000 would be specifically for work in the square.“This is something we have been talking about doing in the square for a while now,” Piccoli said. “If you remember, the bluestone was taken out at the corners years ago because the trucks would go up on the corners.
Picolli said the project would include removing roughly half of these sandstone areas and replacing them with concrete. “There are some of the areas where the sandstone is already gone and it is just a bed of motor, but I think everybody is in agreement that it needs to be replaced due to safety issues,” he said. “A lot of contractors didn’t even want to look at this because it is a project that needs to be methodically done. Plywood will have to be placed in front of the building windows as to not have glass breaking.
