Comment: If you can't afford to pay workers, you shouldn't be in business

have all been accused of underpaying staff – there is substantial other data to suggest wage theft is endemic across smaller businesses in the industry. The Fair Work Ombudsman has called out hospitality as over-represented in its compliance operations. Despite it making up about 7 per cent of Australia’s workforce, hospitality accounts for the highest number of disputes with which the ombudsman assisted in the past two years. It made more than $4.

In the face of all this evidence, it was particularly galling to hear this week that the hospitality industry’s peak body has rejected the claim that there is a culture of underpayment in Australian cafes and restaurants.: "I wouldn’t say there is a culture of underpayment. What I would say is that the award is extremely complex and … it can become very confusing for a restaurant, cafe or catering owner to actually calculate the fair wage.

The extent of the underpayments and the duplicitous nature in which many of these occur means it is simply not credible to argue this wage theft is attributable to an innocent mistake by employers. The same approach should be applied to employers with respect to labour standards. An employer’s failure to do their due diligence and properly understand the law around minimum wages or to intentionally skim from workers’ wages is wholly unacceptable. Complexity in the award is no excuse for stealing.

Law breakers and tax dodgers, they parade themselves as if they are royalties, but it turns out they may have dark side.

Since George Calombaris underpaid his workers I never watched Masterchef again.

If you commit wage theft you should be in jail.

No these 3 disgrace to society making folks cry never want to be in there company utter crap

violetstirling workers should be paid according to the value of their work to the one doing the paying. If they don't like it, work elsewhere or start their own business They are selling their industry & skill. No one but the two involved in the transaction gets to determine what that's worth

Typical fucking media agencies crucifying. Anyone that’s successful. GC is part of a company with hundreds on the payroll. Everyone got paid. He’s just been made an example of. Move on.

Do you really think gcalombaris sits there in the accounts department checking everyone’s pay?

That's right

The interest on the 7+million dollars would have been more than the $200,000 fine. George would have actually made money on this theft!

I totally agree, my business is all about ethics in business. Shame in any business that does this.

.....and if you are a crook you shouldn’t be able to continue your business .

MasterThief...

Agree.

This is a completely bullshit take. Where is a real editorial board when you need one?

Gready fat cats, many good chefs in Australia to take their places at fraction of cost.

Greed is what happened

Gouging epidemic happens everywhere from banks all the way down to your local store 3rd world conditions

Or, they CAN afford to pay them properly but either choose not to, or can’t be bothered. Which is what happened with Georgie boy.

gallerychapel I told this to my magat cousin before blocking her on social media when she whined about having to pay a living wage plus health insurance.

Too greedy for profit... they forget how hard its for ppl to survive paycheck to paycheck

Exactly

George should be sent to jail he is a thief that stole 7 million dollars.

another ridiculous headline ..... he made 7 million dollars for himself ..... he can afford it .....he chose to be a thief instead.
